Torchy’s Tacos in Odessa, Texas designed by Chioco Design in Austin, Texas. The main inspiration came from trying to tie the design to Odessa or the region of the Permian Basin. The identity of this region and Odessa in particular is also tied to the oil and gas industry. The main concept was to use repurposed oilfield pipe for the screen around the building, giving it a recognizable context for many of the patrons. The screen responds to the harsh environment by shading the largely glass exterior walls. The building is somewhat raised on a plinth so that pedestrians can still see into the building without the screen blocking too much of the energy created inside and people on the patio.
