TX Architects: The Awards Issue – 2121 South Lamar

“The transformation of this project afforded the jury an opportunity to celebrate the notion of renovation and restoration in a very contemporary sense. Both internally and externally, the complete alteration of the physical space … lends to a complete rebirth of this building, and yet [it’s] seemingly appropriate, completely useful, and a wonderful contribution to this vocabulary.”

2121 South Lamar is a complete renovation of a 1980s two-story office building that reconfigures the space to accommodate future tenants. To match the tallest gable and simplify the overall form, the roof was partially raised, allowing for loftier interior spaces. The exterior is clad in thermally modified ash wood that brings warmth to the materials palette of blackened steel wall panels and perforated steel guardrail. A new second-floor balcony offers a serene setting beneath the shade of the site’s heritage live oak trees. The main entry to the second floor integrates oak floors and stairs with white oak paneling that takes its cues from the exterior board and batten installation. At the top of the stairs is an office lobby with built-in upholstered seating and a small amenities bar.
